Burglar struck with golf club during break-in

The man, in his early 20s, is reportedly “known” to gardaí.
The attempted burglary took place at Glencar, Letterkenny early yesterday. The suspected burglar was approached inside the house by the owner, a well-known local businessman.
An altercation took place and one of the men, understood to be the alleged trespasser, was taken to hospital.
A man was later arrested at Letterkenny General Hospital in connection with an earlier burglary in which he sustained injuries.
He was taken to Letterkenny Garda Station where he was being questioned by gardaí last night. He is expected to appear before Letterkenny District Court this morning.
The man arrested is currently on bail following an incident during which a man was seriously assaulted last year.
The man’s victim had to receive plastic surgery to his face following the attack which took place in Letterkenny.
The attempted break-in yesterday was the latest in a number of burglaries across Co Donegal in recent weeks.
Among the victims was 96-year-old Margaret ‘Gretta’ Lilly, who was punched in the stomach by intruders who broke into her Buncrana home.
She was robbed of a substantial amount of cash which she had been saving to have new windows put into her home. A number of people have appeared before the courts in relation to the incident and are awaiting trial.
Also in Donegal, a widow has been dealt a heart-breaking blow by a burglar. He stole her gold engagement and wedding rings during a break-in at her home off the Ballybofey Rd outside Donegal town on Sunday.
The house was unoccupied at the time. Gardaí said the burglar broke a window to enter the property.
