British prime minister David Cameron has said he will campaign to keep his country in the EU, provided the bloc changes its fundamental nature to better suit the UK’s interests.

In a long-awaited speech, Mr Cameron attempted to woo the eurosceptics in his party that have threatened rebellion, the US that wants its closest European ally to remain in the EU, British business that is wary of leaving the EU, and the British public.

Mr Cameron insists the over-riding purpose of the EU is different from when it was formed after the Second World War.
