A sum in the region of €50,000 is believed to be unaccounted for.

Supt Dan Flavin, who is heading the investigation, said: “This is a very significant investigation and I am pleased at the progress.”

He said the investig-ation was launched foll-owing a complaint to gardaí.

Supt Flavin said a file was now being prepared which he said would be sent in due course to the DPP.

While he would not comment on the details of the probe, it is believed extra resources from the fraud squad are being made available.

“There is assistance such as other services from An Garda Síochána which are available to use and we can call on these,” said Supt Flavin.

“We are pleased with the progress of the investigation and statements have been taken from a number of people and a file is being prepared.”

He would not comment on the sum involved in the investigation, but sources have dismissed speculation that it was far in excess of €50,000.

Officers from the GAA club are assisting gardaí as the investigation progresses.

Supt Flavin would not say if any money had been recovered.
