Motorists almost met their portaloo on roads

A portaloo, an oven, and even a boat were among some of the unusual sights which perplexed motorists met on the roads in the past year.

According to AA Roadwatch, it also received calls about angry swans, a raging bull, and fox cubs blocking the paths of drivers.

Rebecca Horan of AA Roadwatch said a man called the organisation after spotting a Silver Cruise motorboat anchored in the middle of the N11, which probably fell off the back of a lorry.

“It caused some delays, but all went swimmingly once removed.”

She said each day AA Roadwatch reports on many incidents, predominantly important messages on road safety, collisions, and delays.

“However, more often than you would think, something more unusual, quirky at best, will come along and demand an ooh, an ahh or even an ouch,” Ms Horan said.

She added that tweets into the @aaroadwatch Twitter account warned of dozens of deer, goats, sheep, dogs, and up to 50 horses blocking roads and “there were many, many trucks that didn’t know their size and headed towards tunnels and bridges only to find themselves stuck fast”.

Traffic also was diverted due to 25 major protests.

“All in all traffic caused fits of rage, weather interfered with our plans from time to time, and throughout the year there were a few strange incidents to brighten our days. You couldn’t make it up if you tried. All we can do is wait to see what next year will bring and remember, never ever drive with a full portaloo.”
