Poster campaign aims to tackle suicide

Posters displaying more than a dozen suicide prevention helpline numbers have been launched by South Kerry coroner Terence Casey.

Poster campaign aims to tackle suicide

Earlier this year, after presiding at inquests into the deaths of six people who had taken their own lives, he called for information on such services to be made available in pubs and other public places.

The posters, sponsored by the voluntary group Be Aware Prevent Suicide, will be distributed to pubs, hotels, sports clubs, and any place where people gather socially.

“I hope that the distribution of these posters in public places will help to save lives,” said Mr Casey.

“Even if they save just one or two lives, it will be worth the effort. I would appeal to all publicans and other businesses dealing with the public to display them.

“Through my work, I am conscious of the deep levels of despair and isolation that some people experience. I am also aware there is so much help only a phonecall away. I would encourage people to reach out for that help and support.”

The poster was launched during the annual Killarney Rotary Club Wine and Art Evening in the Malton Hotel. The two main beneficiaries of the event were Kerry Stars Special Olympics and Be Aware Prevent Suicide.

Be Aware chairwoman Deirdre Fee said the poster was a direct response to a suggestion by Mr Casey that helpline information should be made available at the back of toilet doors in pubs, nightclubs, hotels, sports clubs, and social spaces.

Her group would be working with the Killarney Vintners’ Association and other organisations to distribute the posters where they are needed, she said.

Anyone who would like to help distribute the posters or contribute to the cost, should contact Ms Fee on 086 2308788.
