Man jailed for trying to pull garda over a wall during arrest

A man involved in a fight tried to pulled a garda over a wall during an attempted arrest.

Garda Michelle Barron testified at Cork District Court yesterday that she managed to stabilise herself when the man tried to pull her over the wall.

The accused continued to wrestle with her until they both fell to the ground.

Garda Barron managed to hold on to the man until garda assistance arrived.

Judge Olann Kelleher imposed a three-month jail sentence on the defendant, Liam Doyle, of 66 Greenhills Court, South Douglas Rd, Cork, on a charge of resisting arrest.

A concurrent two-month sentence was imposed on Doyle for engaging in threatening behaviour.

Garda Barron said the defendant was extremely intoxicated at the time and became very aggressive.

“He said he would hit me if I didn’t leave him alone,” said Garda Barron. “He grabbed on to me and attempted to pull me over a wall. I managed to stabilise myself. He knocked us both to the ground. He continued to struggle until assistance arrived.”

Diarmuid Kelleher, solicitor, said Doyle apologised the following day and had been drinking heavily at the time. He attended at Arbour House in order to deal with an alcohol problem.
