Risk of tragedies at ‘lethal’ junction highlighted
Brendan Cronin described the Lewis Road junction, near Fitzgerald Stadium on the N22 bypass, as “lethal”.
There have been several multiple-vehicle accidents at the notorious junction, he claimed, and it was also dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists who cross the road to reach the sports ground.
The Independent councillor called for the removal of the right-hand turn at the junction.
Kerry County Council has acknowledged that works would immensely improve safety, but pointed out that such a proposal would also increase traffic volumes on the busy nearby Tralee Road roundabout, which is also regarded as hazardous.
Mr Cronin, nevertheless, felt a left-turn only system should be introduced for a six-week trial period, even if it meant traffic having to turn at the Tralee Road roundabout before heading back in the Cork direction.
“I think people would prefer to be delayed a little and be in a queue rather than being killed in a crash,” he said.
The council’s roads director Charlie O’Sullivan said even temporary changes at the junction called for public consultation, which would mean further delay.
However, he said they would again approach the NRA with a view to making the stretch of road safer.
Improvements were carried out in 2004 at what the council described as a complex junction, including footpaths, central islands, cycle way islands and signage.
The aim was to reduce traffic speed and give clearer definition to the junction, said the council.
There are also plans to build a roundabout on HSE land a short distance west of the junction. That proposal, intended to take place in conjunction with a private development, is on hold.
Meanwhile, 120 submissions have been received by the council in relation to a draft traffic management plan for Tralee.
According to Tralee Chamber Alliance, the majority of businesses are opposed to plans to pedestrianise the Mall.
