Hundreds of comments on social media claiming convicted rapist Larry Murphy may be staying in either North or East Cork have been flatly denied by a number of Garda sources.

Posts on Facebook and Twitter in the past few days suggested Murphy, 47, was seen in Midleton and was staying in that area. A number of other posts said he was also seen in Mallow.

The father-of-three was released from Arbour Hill Prison on Aug 11, 2010, after serving 10½ years of a 14-year sentence for the rape and attempted murder of a Carlow businesswoman in Feb 2000.

Murphy isn’t tagged and neither is he the subject of a supervision order because he was jailed before the introduction of the Sex Offenders Act in 2001.

Facebook and Twitter comments also alluded to the carpenter being seen in the Youghal, Castlemartyr, Castlelyons and Killavullen areas.

The rumours that Murphy was in the East Cork area first emerged over the weekend. Garda sources in North and East Cork said as far as they were concerned there was no truth in the social media claims that Murphy was in either region.
