The name Savita is believed to come from the Hindu word for sun and its meaning subsequently taken to be bright or illuminating.

It will be of little comfort to those who loved her that it took a woman with this prophetic name to shine a light into the dark corners of this country’s political and moral neuroses.

At least Savita Halappanavar’s name can be said in public and her vibrant, smiling face made known to all so that her story might be humanised and the tragedy and shame of it made all the more compelling.
