1-in-7 retired civil servants have pensions of over €40k

In response to a parliamentary question, Public Expenditure and Reform Minister Brendan Howlin gave a breakdown of the pensions of 23,446 retired civil servants and employees of seven smaller bodies and agencies whose pensions are paid on an agency basis by the Office of the Paymaster General and VECs and Institutes of Technology.

Of those, 3,180 retirees receive more than €40,000 — roughly the equivalent of the average industrial wage. The breakdown also reveals that there are 76 pensioners in those categories receiving pensions in excess of €100,000 per year and five who receive sums of between €120,000-€130,000.
