Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a shot was fired at a house in Cork City

Gardaí probe house gunfire

Nobody was injured in the shooting, which happened at 1.15am yesterday on the northside of the city at Avonmore Park, off Old Youghal Rd.

Garda sources described the couple living in the two-storey house as “respectable” and are working on the likelihood that their home was mistakenly targeted.

Damage was caused to a downstairs window and forensic experts have examined what appeared to be a piece of metal casing which may have contained shotgun pellets.

The couple escaped injury, but were said to have been shocked by the shooting.

They were being comforted by neighbours yesterday as gardaí continued their inquiries.

They said they were asleep upstairs when they were awoken by a loud bang and immediately contacted gardaí, who quickly arrived at the house.

Insp Mary King, who is leading the Garda investigation, said that they were anxious to hear from anybody who was in the Avonmore Park area between 12.30am and 1.30am.

“We want to speak to anybody who may have seen or heard anything suspicious there,” said Insp King.

She added that the couple were “respectable people”.

The house was cordoned off yesterday by gardaí for technical examination, and ballistics experts are examining the metal object which was retrieved from the scene.
