Public sector workers face further pay cuts with nearly 90 types of allowances to be abolished where no business case exists for the expense or where it is considered outdated.

The Department of Public Expenditure and Reform has written to departments outlining areas where allowances for workers should be axed.

Departments have until early next year to agree to the proposed cuts, which include abolishing certain claims for gardaí, the Defence Forces, and officials in local authorities.
