Just six heart transplants were performed in Ireland last year, it has emerged.

Irish Kidney Association chief executive Mark Murphy said latest figures showed Ireland was in a “disappointing” 24th position for heart transplants in Europe.

Mr Murphy, referring to new European organ donation and transplantation figures, said the absence of a dedicated heart surgeon was partly to blame.
