Households likely to pay €300 property tax

The average household is likely to pay €300 a year in a property tax which will be announced in December’s budget.

A Department of Finance document gives the first real indication of how much the controversial charge is likely to be and suggests it will be based on the self-assessed value of a home.

The document, drawn up by the department’s tax strategy group last year, but only published in recent days, said there are 1.6m non-local authority households in the country.
