Illegal drugs played a major role in the death of a man who became ill while being restrained by gardaí during a drugs raid almost five years ago, an inquest heard yesterday.

Assistant state pathologist Dr Margot Bolster told Cork City Coroner’s Court her postmortem on David O’Mahony, 22, showed he had taken cocaine, heroin, alcohol and probably cannabis in the hours before his death.

The cause of death had been cocaine, alcohol and lignocaine toxicity during restraint, she said.
