Twomey children’s bodies still with English coroner

Plymouth Coroner’s Court is liaising with the family of Connie and Elber Twomey, from Meelin in North Cork, before releasing the bodies of their children who died in the Jul 6 crash in Torquay.

Oisín, 16 months, died along with his unborn sister, Elber Marie, after a car driven by Marek Wojiechowski, 26, ploughed into the Twomeys’ car while they were on holidays.

Their parents, Connie, 39, and Elber, 36, suffered multiple devastating injuries, and spent almost a month in Derriford Hospital.

Once their medical conditions stabilised, they were flown to Cork University Hospital last month.

It is understood that after the opening of an inquest into the children’s deaths, the family asked the UK authorities for more time in the hope that the condition of their critically injured parents would improve.

However, a spokesperson for Plymouth Coroner’s Court confirmed last night that it has yet to release the children’s bodies for burial.

Connie suffered multiple injuries, including devastating head injuries, and remains in the intensive care unit at CUH, where it is understood his condition, while serious, has stabilised in recent weeks.

Elber, who suffered multiple injuries, has improved to the extent that she been able to leave CUH.

The Twomey family has declined to comment publicly on the tragedy.

The UK’s Independent Police Complaints Commission is conducting an investigation into the accident because it was witnessed by a police officer.

The probe is set to take several more weeks as witnesses are still being sought.
