One out of six fuel pumps is not giving motorists what they pay for, according to a survey carried out on forecourts around the country.

In most cases the errors made were in favour of the customer but there were a substantial number of instances where the driver got less fuel than was paid for.

As the price of a litre continues to soar, reaching more than €1.70, the AA study of the accuracy of Irish fuel pumps found that in 16% of cases the pumps were inaccurate.
