Wording of children’s rights referendum set to be agreed

The wording for the referendum on enshrining the rights of the child in the Constitution is set to be decided before the Dáil resumes in two weeks’ time.

Children’s Minister Frances Fitzgerald yesterday briefed ministers on the work of a Cabinet sub-committee which met on numerous occasions over the summer to discuss the referendum, which was first mooted back in 2006.

That sub-committee included: Ms Fitzgerald; the Taoiseach; the Tánaiste; Pat Rabbitte, the communications minister; Alan Shatter, the justice minister; and Attorney General Máire Whelan.
