Second charge in Geoghegan murder

A Limerick man is due to be charged at the Special Criminal Court today with the murder of Shane Geoghegan, aged 28, who was gunned down near his home on Nov 9, 2008.

Last February, Barry Doyle, aged 26, of Portland Row, Dublin, was jailed for life for the murder.

The man due to be charged today, the second to be charged in the case, is 30 years of age.

Members of the notorious McCarthy-Dundon gang have been suspected by gardaí of “priming” Doyle to carry out the murder.

In a case of mistaken identity, Doyle was driven on a gang attack to murder another man, Johnny McNamara, who lived near Mr Geoghegan in Kilteeragh estate, Dooradoyle.

Mr Geoghegan had been watching a rugby game at a friend’s house in Kilteeragh earlier that night and was on his way to the house he shared with his girlfriend, Jenna Barry, when a car sped up and a gunman got out and started firing.

As Mr Geoghegan walked home, Doyle mistook him for his intended target and moved in with a semi-automatic handgun.

Doyle chased Mr Geoghegan, who ran to the rear of a house in the estate, but Doyle shot him dead.

The trial heard Mr Geoghegan pleaded with Doyle before the fatal shots were fired as Mr Geoghegan lay on the ground.

After the trial, Chief Supt John Scanlan said the investigation into the murder would continue.

From an early stage in the investigation, the McCarthy-Dundon gang have been suspected of the crime and it is believed a member of the gang drove Doyle to Kilteeragh that night and supplied him with the gun with which Mr Geoghegan was murdered.

Mr Geoghegan was captain of the thirds team at Garryowen rugby club, whose grounds are less than 100 metres from where he was shot dead. The murder was met with public outrage and the setting up of the Shane Geoghegan Trust which works with young people in Limerick.

Shane Geoghegan’s mother Mary has been informed by gardaí of today’s court appearence.
