Taxi driver stabbed and left for dead in savage robbery

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to a savage attack on a taxi driver who was robbed and left for dead on the side of a roadway in Co Tipperary.

The taxi driver picked up a fare from two men from outside his taxi base at Treaty Cabs on Davis St in Limerick City last Saturday night.

As he left the men to their destination in Newport, Co Tipperary, the two of them set upon him and stabbed him with a knife and a screwdriver.

The men then stole the taxi after first dumping the driver at the side of the road.

The driver sustained stab wounds to his upper body but, according to reports by gardaí, he escaped with his life when his chest bone deflected the impact of the knife used in the attack.

The car was later found burnt out on Childers Rd, Limerick City, in the early hours of last Sunday.

Gda Sgt Tony Wells of Nenagh Garda Station yesterday appealed for witnesses who may have seen either the two men getting the taxi in Davis St in Limerick, or the assault on the taxi driver in Newport.

The driver is said to be off work to recover from his ordeal.

One of the men involved in the attack is described as having dark, short hair and was wearing a tracksuit with white stripes, black runners, and a grey sweatshirt.

The other man is described as being of slight build, and was wearing a black tracksuit and white runners.
