Double Olympic win to be honoured
The event will mark the 80th anniversary of Dr Pat’s second gold medal triumph for hammer throwing at the Los Angeles games, in 1932. He won the first at the 1928 Amsterdam games.
A hammer throwing competition will form part of a family fun day organised by Dromtarriffe Hall Committee.
Dr O’Callaghan died in 1991 at his home in Clonmel, Co Tipperary, where he had practised medicine for 60 years.
Committee chairman Jerry Murphy said they were delighted to take part in the Discover Duhallow Initiative. “It is an honour to have such a great Olympic champion from the parish and we hope that local families will come out on Sunday to enjoy all the events.”
Discover Duhallow — a Day of the Region is the theme for 10 days of cultural, educational, sporting and enterprise activities. Groups in 21 communities in parts of north Cork and east Kerry are showcasing their resources and assets in a diverse programme of events.
