Gardaí are examining whether online accounts of nearly 7,000 state and bank employees have been hacked after details of their email addresses and passwords were found on a website.

A data protection company, DataBackup.ie, made the discovery and referred the matter to the Garda Computer Crimes Investigation Unit (CCUI).

Among the list of 6,700 emails and passwords are individuals based at the Revenue Commissioners, Bank of Ireland, AIB, and the HSE. The vast majority of the accounts appear to be private email accounts, rather than official accounts.
