East Kerry condemn Gneeveguilla to drop

East Kerry easily brushed aside the weak challenge posed by Gneeveguilla in their Kerry SFC clash played at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday.

In a local derby that lacked any real bite, the divisional side made amends for their one-point loss to Milltown/Castlemaine in the first round, while Gneeveguilla, Munster IFC champions in 2010, shipped another heavy defeat, having succumbed to Dingle by eight points last time out.

By virtue of this loss, Gneeveguilla’s sojourn in the senior ranks of the Kerry SFC has come to an end, while East Kerry now go into the draw for the next round of the competition.

The writing was on the wall for Gneeveguilla early on in this encounter. East Kerry, with Mike O’Donoghue and Niall O’Mahony firing on all cylinders in attack, ably assisted by Jeff O’Donoghue and Derry Ahern, rattled off three quick-fire points inside four minutes.

By the 10th minute, the divisional side’s lead had stretched to five points, with midfielder Jimmy O’Leary and Kerry junior marksman Mike O’Donoghue chipping in with scores.

And, though Liam Murphy opened Gneeveguilla’s account soon after O’Donoghue’s third point, further scores courtesy of Niall O’Mahony (two), Mike O’Donoghue (two), Derry Ahern and Jeff O’Donoghue, saw East Kerry in front by 10 points nearing half-time.

Liam Murphy had the last say for Gneeveguilla, successfully pointing a free in first-half injury-time, but it was East Kerry who retired dominant at the break, leading by 0-11 to 0-2.

The pedestrian nature of proceedings continued in the second half, though Gneeveguilla upped their effort, reeling off three points in a row in a five-minute period after half-time. That scoring burst reduced the arrears to 0-12 to 0-6, however that was as good as it got for Gneeveguilla.

Sensing danger, East Kerry flexed their muscles and outscored their opponents by 0-6 to 0-1 in the final 20 minutes of the game. Jeff O’Donoghue pitched in with a tidy point while Niall O’Mahony and Mike O’Donoghue underlined their class, contributing three and two points respectively.
