Some sex offenders to have conviction erased under law

Some sex offenders will be able to have their convictions erased under proposed laws, contrary to official statements that sex offences are excluded.

The Rape Crisis Network of Ireland has raised concerns about previously unknown sections of the Spent Convictions Bill 2012 and will make representations to Justice Minister Alan Shatter.

The Irish Examiner has established that certain sex offenders will be able to avail of provisions in the bill, which is aimed at reintegrating offenders back into society, particularly through employment, which is often blocked by having a criminal record.
