Probe of €3.6bn error a ‘whitewash’

A probe into the Department of Finance’s miscalculation of national debt by €3.6bn was branded a whitewash.

Dáil’s Public Accounts Committee John McGuinness made the charge as he warned the blunder could happen again.

One of the two investigations into the incident recommends stripping the department of responsibility for such matters and transferring them to the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
