Politics has failed in this state and we only have ourselves to blame. We can no longer opt for the default ‘Blame the British’ mantra. The flawed electoral system, weak politicians, vested interests and the self-centred demands of constituents are to blame, writes Michael Clifford

THE Savage Eye lays it out straight. The RTÉ satirical show purports to examine various ailments that afflict Ireland. Each one is explained by way of a number of reasons, and, irrespective of the ailment, one of the reasons for its infliction is always “British Rule”.

The same ridiculous excuse could be presented for the ailment that is Irish politics. For the beginnings of the dysfunctional nature of Irish politics can be traced to a classical, post- colonial mentality. But after over 90 years on our own, there is nobody else to blame for the failure but ourselves, and ourselves alone.
