Two teens questioned over fatal assault
The men, in their late teens, were arrested yesterday morning by gardaí investigating the fatal assault on Martin Brophy, a father-of-one from Waterford.
His body was found by young people in a former college building at Newgate Street in the city on Monday at 5.30pm.
Gardaí detained the men shortly after 10am yesterday at separate residences in Waterford City and brought them to Waterford Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. They can be held until later today.
Both are reported to be locals.
Mr Brophy was last seen by his family last Saturday afternoon. Gardaí have appealed to anyone who saw him sometime after 4pm in the Poleberry area of Waterford to get in contact with them on 051-305300.
They have also appealed to householders and businesspeople in the New Street, Newgate Street, John’s Lane, Stephen’s Street and Brown’s Lane area to come forward with any information if they saw anything suspicious on Saturday, Sunday or Monday.
A postmortem carried out on Mr Brophy’s body on Tuesday confirmed he had been assaulted.
