O’Brien back on delivery duty

After delivering a man of the match performance in the European Cup final, Leinster’s Sean O’Brien turned his attention to deliveries of another kind — a trip home to the family farm in Ardristan, just outside Tullow, Co Carlow, to help his father with one of the family’s calving cows.

O’Brien back on delivery duty

Sean Sr missed out on his son’s wrecking-ball performance against Ulster in Saturday’s Heineken Cup final to watch over the family livestock. But despite a quiet day in the calving pen on Saturday, there were signs of movement yesterday.

“It was worth waiting for all right. We didn’t have one born yesterday [Saturday] but there is one going today,” Sean Sr said yesterday.

“I’m glad now because I wouldn’t have made it back in time for that. I wouldn’t be happy if I wasn’t there. I’d be worrying about one thing or the other. It’s just as well I stayed.”

Father and son haven’t been talking since the final but Sean Sr was expecting to see his son return in time to help with the birth.

“If he’s around he’ll give a hand with the calving. He won’t have a few days off though because they have the match next week [RaboDirect Pro12 final] and he’ll be straight back into it. But he will be down. He’s always around so he can muck around with the cattle.”

Sean Sr watched his son dominate the match from the local rugby club in Tullow. Surrounded by jubilant supporters of his son, he was paying the price yesterday. “I wouldn’t be great in the head today now. I had a few in the end. It’d be hard not to. But I got up to check on the cows a few times.

“I couldn’t believe it when Sean got man of the match. He had a great game, scored a try and made the other one. They all played well but he had a great game. They were all very excited about him out in the rugby club.”

And Sean Jr’s brother William and sister Alex who made the trip had cause to celebrate too, as they scooped a few euro.

“William had Sean backed. I think he got him at 16/1 or 18/1 for the first try scorer and 9/1 for man of the match,” Sean Sr said.
