An armed gang were preparing to ram raid a bank in a Co Cavan town with a telegraph pole atop a van before they realised the bank was still open for business.

The robbers entered the bank at Main St, Kingscourt shortly before 5pm yesterday holding up staff before making off with a “substantial sum of cash” according to gardaí.

The men initially made off in a waiting car, which was set alight a short distance away, and escaped in a second car in the direction of Bailieboro.

No shots were fired during the incident and no injures reported. No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who noticed suspicious activity yesterday, or in recent days, in the vicinity of Main St to contact them.
