Some of the stars of Irish country music turned out to help Crystal Swing frontman Derek Burke celebrate his 21st birthday with close family and friends, and about 300 invited guests, at the Midleton Park Hotel.
Derek’s grandmother, Marion Murray, who will be 91 in September, was among the guests of honour.
Derek shot to national fame with his mother, Mary, and sister, Dervla in 2010 when their video of ‘She Drinks Tequila’ became an internet sensation. It made a star of the flamboyant, white-suited hucklebucking frontman.
Since then, the band has achieved international fame, including appearances on the Ellen DeGeneres show in the US.
They have just returned from performing on a luxury Caribbean cruise liner with other top artists, including Daniel O’Donnell.
And after performing at their fair share of 21st bashes over the year, Derek got to kick back and relax last night as The Conquerers, the musicians who helped the band on their latest release, Sun Still Shines, and one of Derek’s childhood idols, Aon Focal Eile legend, Richie Kavanagh, performed.
Members of the famous Tipperary-based Morrissey family, including Louise, were also among the guests.
Derek was persuaded to perform the Hucklebuck and said he was delighted to be back home to celebrate his 21st.
“We love playing in Cork most as this is our home county,” he said.
“One thing I can say for certain is I have no plans on settling down or getting married. I am enjoying the single life at the moment and can’t see that changing for a while yet.”
His mother, Mary, said it’s been a great week of celebrations, which included an appearance on the Craig Doyle show on Thursday, where Derek was presented with a cake.
