An Post defends rural branch closures

An Post has defended the closure of rural post offices, despite widespread criticism over the lack of consultation with local communities.

Several members of the joint Oireachtas committee on communications claimed there was no commercial justification in many cases for branch closures.

An Post chief executive Donal Connell said the decision to close post offices generally arose following the retirement of postmasters or their decision to exit the business.
