Under 5% of mental health facilities comply with all regulations

Just three of the 64 in-patient mental health facilities — less than 5% — in the country are fully compliant with all regulations, according to a report from the mental health watchdog.

The Mental Health Commission’s annual report also shows that almost one third of all admissions of children are to adult facilities, a fall on previous years but still termed “unacceptable”, while there was a slight increase in the number of people involuntarily detained last year under mental health laws.

In publishing its report yesterday, the MHC said that progress had been made in overhauling many elements of Ireland’s mental health in-patient services, but work still needed to be done.
