The car manufacturer is recalling 1.3m cars worldwide as the problems could, in extreme cases, result in a fire. BMW said it was ordering the recall after the problem came to light through “continuous testing” and customer complaints.

“In order to carry out a quality measure, BMW is recalling all BMW 5 and 6 series models of the previous generation, built between 2003 and 2010 and still on the market, for repair at authorised dealers,” a statement read.

In Ireland, about 8,500 cars are affected by the recall. BMW Ireland has said it will be contacting owners directly in the coming days to invite them to take their cars to their dealer. The company said the required preventative measures to correct the problem takes about 30 minutes to complete.

In Britain, some 109,000 5 series and 6 series models are expected to be recalled. BMW has said it is not aware of any injuries or accidents resulting from the fault.

The news comes just a few weeks after a bumper 2011 was announced by the company.

It reported a net profit of €4.9bn in 2011, an increase of over 51% from 2010.

Pre-tax profits also rose by in excess of 52% to €7.38bn.

BMW sold almost 1.67m vehicles, an increase of over 14% on the previous year.

As well as manufacturing its signature car, BMW also produces Mini and Rolls Royce cars and motorbikes.
