The lucky punter was named last night as Cork native Conor Murphy, second head lad at the Henderson yard. He is understood to have landed an accumulator with bookmakers Bet365, featuring five of Henderson’s six festival winners and netted himself as much as £1.4 million (almost €1.7m).
He had a £50 wager at ante-post prices with the firm in November.
The winning horses were Sprinter Sacre (Arkle Chase), Simonsig (Neptune Investment Novices’ Hurdle), Bobs Worth (RSA Chase), Finian’s Rainbow (Queen Mother Champion Chase) and Riverside Theatre (Ryanair Chase).
Bookmakers are normally anxious to go public when a client enjoys a massive payout, but Bet365 were unwilling to confirm the winner’s identity.
Bet365 spokesman Pat Cooney, on The Guardian’s website, said: “We’re pleased for all our customers who’ve had a winning day today but we don’t discuss individual accounts.
“This one particular customer’s had an extremely good time of it.”
The BBC’s Claire Balding tweeted: “The lad who looks after Finian’s Rainbow had a 5-timer on Nicky Henderson winners & has won £1 million! Says he’ll still be at work tomorrow.”
The rumours circulating at Cheltenham last night, however, were that the figure won may actually be in the region of £1.4m.
