The Crawford Gallery in Cork needs more government funding to open on Sundays and bank holidays.

But Jimmy Deenihan, the arts minister, held out little hope yesterday that extra funding will be made available in the short-term to increase access to what is the only national cultural institution outside of Dublin.

Opening hours is a matter for the board, Mr Deenihan said. “We are looking at all cultural institutions at the moment. We are looking at new arrangements in the future and opening hours would be an issue there.
