Shatter: 37 more vacant senior garda jobs may be filled

Justice Minister Alan Shatter has indicated that a further 37 vacant senior garda positions may be filled once he knows the full extent of retirements at the end of this month.

The minister was responding to criticism that “gaping holes” remained in the force’s higher ranks despite his announcement that 33 of the 70 senior vacancies would be filled.

Yesterday, the Cabinet agreed to appoint two assistant commissioners, eight chief superintendents and 23 superintendents.
