Wogan resists red carpet treatment in his native city

He’s a favourite of Queen Elizabeth and interviewed the rich and famous, but when he comes back home, Terry Wogan resists the trappings of his showbiz career.

Mr Wogan has turned down pomp and ceremony on his return to his native Limerick in May as guest of honour with his wife Helen at the Mayor’s Ball.

Mayor of Limerick Cllr Jim Long decided to roll out the red carpet for one of the city’s most famous son’s when he received a letter of acceptance from Sir Terry, already a Freeman of the City. After consultation with Garda authorities, a motorbike escort was being organised to whisk Mr Wogan from Shannon Airport to the city in a stretch limo.

However on learning of the arrangements, the radio host yesterday sent an email to the mayor stating: “There’s no need for a police escort, I think I’m safe enough in Limerick.”

Sir Terry also indicated he did not need a luxury car to bring him to the event.

“I’m looking forward to celebrating Limerick with the mayor and thank you [mayor] for your welcoming letter.”

Mr Long said: “It is just great to have Terry Wogan a Freeman of the City of Limerick as my guest of honour along with his wife Helen on what promises to be a wonderful occasion.

“I wanted to put out the red carpet, but Terry has never lost his down to earth Limerick upbringing having been reared on the Ennis Road and got his education from the Jesuits at Crescent College.”

Proceeds from the event will go to local charities.
