Midlands town crowned baby boom capital

Portlaoise is the baby boom capital of Ireland.

Figures released by the local parish church, Saint Peter and Paul’s, show 365 babies were baptised there last year — or one every day of the year.

That is the highest of any church in Ireland and the highest number since parish records began in 1826.
