HSE chief executive Cathal Magee, who is 15 months into a five-year contract, may not be guaranteed a new senior position under health service restructuring plans announced by Health Minister James Reilly.

A spokesman for Dr Reilly said that while the restructuring plans were still at an early legislative stage, the chief executive position would not exist when the changes have been made.

Instead, a director general role will take its place at the head of the health service.
