Schoolgirl’s art book picked up by supermarket chain
Musgrave Group yesterday confirmed it is stocking 16-year-old Kate McCarthy’s book in SuperValu stores throughout West Cork.
Kate, from Caheragh near Skibbereen, recently launched her first art workbook for children, Fun Art for Kids.
It provides children with interactive art exercises with mini tutorials on the colour wheel, 3D pictures collage and much more.
The idea for the publication grew out of exercises Kate used while supervising children at the Vinefield Studio Saturday group in Skibbereen, where one pupil was awarded the top prize in the Texaco Art competition.
The book is dedicated to Kate’s mother, who lost her battle with cancer earlier this year and who encouraged her daughter to pursue her love of art and art teaching.
Speaking about the book, Kate says: “I decided to set about work on a book mostly for my own enjoyment. I love the freedom art brings, allowing you to escape reality and create an imaginary world where anything is possible.
“Through the support of my teachers and Inspire Books the idea of publishing a book became possible and the whole process has been really exciting. I am thrilled that the books are now available in SuperValu stores throughout West Cork.
“The deal has driven me to want to create more workbooks for different ages to reveal the joy that art can bring.”
She continued: “The aim of the workbook is to break various art techniques into bite-size exercises that children can do step by step. I have tested all the examples in the book with children of various ages and I give essential tips throughout to make the workbook more interactive and easy to follow. I am extremely proud to have my very first book on the market in time for Christmas.”
Fun Art for Kids is published by Inspire Books, Skibbereen, and retails at €6.
It is available in Skibbereen, Dunmanway, Bantry and Clonakilty SuperValu stores and in selected Centra shops.
