Politicans urge public to buy single

Now, a group of TDs and senators have urged the public to make their charity single a number one this Christmas.

The politicians’ version of the Simon and Garfunkel song, Bridge over Troubled Waters, is in aid of the suicide and self-harm crisis centre Pieta House. It is available to download from iTunes for €1.29.

Senator Lorraine Higgins, one of those who sang on the track, said: “With just a few more shopping days until Christmas, I am asking people to please buy a copy of Bridge over Troubled Water.

“Instead of the usual socks and chocolates for a loved one, giving the gift of our single will also double as a donation to Pieta House.

“All the funds raised from this single are going straight to Pieta House, an amazing charity which has helped over 6,000 people battle depression.”

Pieta House says demand for its services is constantly on the rise, and that 80% of its income comes from fundraising, for which it relies on volunteers.

“Hopefully through the promotion of this single, we can not only raise vital funds for Pieta House, but also get the message out there that help is available for those suffering with depression,” Ms Higgins said.

Politicians featured on the record include ministers Joan Burton, Simon Coveney, Michael Ring and Lucinda Creighton; TDs Regina Doherty, Stephen Donnelly, Frank Feighan, Terence Flanagan, Michael Kitt, Padraig Mac Loughlainn, Peter Mathews, Finian McGrath, Robert Troy and Mick Wallace along with senators Averil Power and Ms Higgins. The track also features the Dublin and Lucan gospel choirs.

The project was the brainchild of TD Derek Keating, who is a board member of Pieta House.
