OWNERS of second homes will be charged €10 extra for paying the Government charge on these properties over-the-counter, rather than online.

The extra fee was announced in the Dáil last night by Environment Minister Phil Hogan. It was immediately described as “completely ridiculous” by Fianna Fáil TD Niall Collins.

The second-home levy, officially known as the Non-Principal Private Residence (NPPR) charge, was introduced in 2008 and is set at €200 a year.
