Station to offer bus info service
The service, in the process of being rolled out in large urban areas, advises passengers as to whether buses are running on time, as well as details about departures.
Welcoming the initiative, Independent councillor Hugh Courtney also highlighted the potential of linking such information to iPhone technology as an aid to passengers.
The information, he said, could be communicated to customers via their mobile phones or relayed to screens at selected parts of the town.
Mr Courtney suggested a screen could be installed in the middle of the Killarney Outlet Centre which adjoins the bus station.
“This means shoppers could keep shopping until a minute or two before their bus is due to leave and run no risk of missing their bus.
“Information like this could be posted anywhere in town and could also be relayed to mobile phones. This is a step in the right direction for transport in our town,” he said.
Mr Courtney, who earlier this year called for real-time passenger information for Bus Éireann customers in Killarney, said significant investment had been made in providing this service to major cities around the country.
He said: “As a leading tourist town, Killarney also needs this service. It’s important our visitors and local users of the service have up-to-date information on the comings and goings of buses.”
