Slash-hook carrier tasered by garda

A TASER gun had to be used by a garda on a man who arrived at the end of a siege situation and ran at gardaí with a slash-hook.

Judge Patrick J Moran imposed a sentence of 30 months, with the last 12 suspended, on Gavin Ring, aged 21, of 6 St Anne’s Road, Gurranabraher, Co Cork, for the incident on January 3 of this year.

Sergeant Dave Foley said a siege situation had developed at the house on St Anne’s Road, where it was alleged that another man was holding three people.

Ring’s mother, back from a night out, found this going on and phoned her son, who was over 1km away, and told him not to come to the scene.

However, Ring, who was carrying a slash-hook, and another man arrived 10 minutes later, after the situation had been brought under control.

Ring was told numerous times to drop the weapon, but refused to do so, Sgt Foley said. He was then tasered by a member of the Regional Support Unit.
