President begins first week on a high note
The soccer fan is expected to be joined by one or more of his sons to cheer on the boys in green at the Aviva stadium.
The President yesterday attended his first official engagements since his inauguration at Dublin Castle on Friday.
Along with his wife Sabina, he attended the annual Remembrance Day service at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, where he laid a wreath of poppies in honour of the war dead.
He then travelled to Derry in his first step to fulfilling a pledge to continue the work of his predecessors Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese in deepening and sustaining peace between all communities on the island.
In Derry, he presented the winning trophy to the All Island School Choir of the Year and made a short speech in which he said: “A people that can sing together in harmony is a great omen for the future.”
His main duty this week will be the appointment of seven people to the Council of State, the body which advises the President on the constitutionality of laws.
Today he will have a meeting at Áras an Uachtaráin with representatives of Diabetes Ireland for World Diabetes Day.
On Wednesday he will attend the National FIS Festival 2011, an award ceremony for short films created by schoolchildren, at The Helix in Dublin City University. On Friday he will be the Irish Book Awards at the RDS.
