Two die in separate one-car crashes

GARDAÍ in Galway and Tipperary are investigating two separate single-vehicle accidents which claimed the lives of a young woman and an elderly man.

Two die in separate one-car crashes

In Tipperary, a man in his 80s died after the car in which he was travelling crashed at about 4.45pm yesterday.

The accident happened on the N7 at Pintown, Roscrea, on the old Limerick Road.

The man, the sole occupant of the car, was taken to Portlaoise General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Roscrea gardaí are now investigating the incident. They can be contacted on 0505 24230.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Galway have appealed for witnesses after a young woman was killed not far from her home on the Galway-Roscommon border in a single-vehicle accident.

Elaine Curley, 19, from Gurran, Creggs, died after her car struck a ditch on the Glinsk to Creggs road at Tonamaddy on Sunday.

She was driving alone when the accident happened at about 10.20pm.

She was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Galway, but died a short time later.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the accident and have asked anyone who was in the Tonamaddy, Creggs, area on Sunday evening between 10pm and 10.30pm to contact Ballinasloe Garda Station on 09096 31890.

The accidents bring to 158 the number of people killed on the roads since the start of the year, although this is still significantly fewer than the 196 killed in accidents over the corresponding period in 2010.
