VHI premiums may rise after European court ruling

STATE health insurance company VHI has not ruled out the possibility of premium hikes following a landmark European Court of Justice ruling ordering it to find fresh funding of up to €300 million.

While a spokeswoman for the company said it believes the capital injection will come “most likely from the exchequer”, she declined to say cost increases for VHI customers will not take place.

However, she said the exact sources of the money VHI needs as a result of the ruling have yet to be finalised and this is “a matter for the Government”.
