THE Employment Appeals Tribunal (EAT) has ruled that two former Bank of Ireland staff were unfairly sacked over their role in circulating “offensive and disturbing” emails.

The EAT found that the bank had operated a flawed investigation into the use of such emails by its staff, It also found that its decision to sack the two female employees was disproportionate to any disciplinary offences they had committed.

The claimants, Sarah Murray, 25, from Ballybrack, Co Dublin, and Sarah Rooney, 25, from Glasthule, Co Dublin, who worked in the bank’s subsidiary, ICS Building Society, were awarded a combined total of €65,300 in compensation.
