CRIMINAL gangs are using self-service cash payment machines, including those in supermarkets and car parks, to launder dyed cash stolen from security vans.

Garda and security sources said it is part of a sophisticated method by which criminal gangs get around security systems introduced in recent years to thwart cash-in-transit robberies.

These systems include cash “smoke” boxes, which cover notes in dye if a box is tampered with or taken a certain distance away from a security van, often a half a mile.
