As the biggest ever Labour parliamentary party gathers for its annual conference, its sudden slump to fourth place in the polls at just 12% has caused disquiet.

Speaking privately, some Labour TDs expressed their concern at the relatively low-key approach adopted by Mr Gilmore since March, when became Foreign Minister and Tánaiste.
